Boat rides on the Ganga

Seen from the water, the ghats become a single, glowing stage. A boat ride at dawn is the image of Varanasi most visitors carry home.

Beware of scammers on the ghats. Touts and self-styled “guides” or “priests” roam the Ganga ghats and temple lanes, offering VIP darshan, pujas, boat rides or “donations for cremation wood”. Never pay anyone in advance, and never pay for a service before you have actually received it. Book temple services only through the official trust.

Sunset & aarti ride

Drift along the ghats at dusk, then moor in front of Dashashwamedh for the Ganga Aarti.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Where do boats start?
Mostly from Dashashwamedh, Assi and the ghats near your hotel. Your boatman can also drop you at Lalita Ghat for the Kashi Vishwanath Dham.
Can I see the cremation ghats from the boat?
Yes, from a respectful distance. Please don’t photograph cremations.
