How the Dham is laid out
Think of it in three parts. At the top is the temple courtyard (mandir chowk) around the main shrine. Below it, a series of broad terraces and buildings — museum, gallery, rest areas, Vedic centre — step down the hill. At the bottom, a gateway opens onto the ghats near Lalita and Jalasen Ghat, a short walk from Manikarnika.
This means you can arrive by boat, bathe in the Ganga, and walk up to the temple without entering the old lanes at all.
Facilities for visitors
Help desks
Information counters near the entrances can tell you current queue status, aarti timings and which gate to use.
Wheelchairs & assistance
Wheelchairs are available for elderly and differently-abled devotees, usually on request at the help desk. Ramps connect most levels.
Drinking water & toilets
Drinking water points and toilets are provided within the precinct.
Lockers & shoe stands
Near the entry gates. Expect queues at peak times.
Museum & gallery
Exhibits on the history of Kashi and the temple, when open.
Shaded rest areas
Covered seating on the terraces — useful for waiting families and older travellers.
Arriving from the river
Many visitors find the river approach the most memorable: take a boat from Dashashwamedh or Assi to the Lalita Ghat gate, step onto the ghats, and climb through the Dham to the temple. It also avoids traffic in the Godowlia area.
In the monsoon (July–September), the river gate may be closed when the Ganga is in flood. Use the city-side gates instead.
